American Idol kicked off its 11th season this year with the traditional line-up: auditions, Hollywood week, then live shows. Breaking tradition, there was a top 13 instead of a top 12. The judges brought back contestant, Jermaine Jones to sing in the live shows, but he was eliminated shortly after. The remaining 12 contestants were:
- Jessica Sanchez
- Phillip Phillips
- Joshua Ledet
- Hollie Cavanaugh
- Skylar Laine
- Elise Testone
- Colton Dixon
- DeAndre Brackensick
- Erika Van Pelt
- Heejun Han
- Jeremy Rosado
- Shannon Magrane
Week by week, the contestants fought for the coveted title, with guidance by the three judges, Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Randy Jackson, and Jimmy Iovine. Each week there was a different theme and the contestants had to chose a song that fit the category and make it their own, all while managing to win over America and the judges. As the weeks progressed, contestants were voted off and left the remaining with more hope to win.
On May 16, the top three, Joshua, Jessica, and Phillip, had the priviliedge to travel back to their hometowns and visit family, friends, and fans. While in town, they all performed for the fans and went back to significant places in their hometowns. Even though, each contestant had a huge support system, it was Joshua that was sent back home for good. Sending Jessica and Phillip into the finale.
The finale of American Idol Season 11 took place on May 23, 2012. The night before, the two contestants each sang three songs and fought hard for votes, but the judges thought that Jessica had overall better performances than Phillip. However, with the record-breaking votes, Phillip Phillips took the title, proving that the judges are not always right and the power of American Idol fans.
The Season 11 American Idol tour kicks off on July 6, 2012 in Detriot, Michigan. Keep an eye out for shows near you.
