Idol Beginnings
Five years ago, Carly Rae Jepsen was a 21 year-old-girl from Mission, British Columbia, trying to chase her dreams. She came one step closer when she finished in third place in Canadian Idol. Jepsen mentioned the singing competition when she said, “On Season 5, I ended up being ushered by my high school drama teacher to go to the audition. It really was the first level of exposure that I ever had.” Soon after, Jepsen began touring Canada with her fellow top 3 finalists. A year later, in 2008, Jepsen’s debut LP “Tug of War” came out, but was not particularly popular in the U.S.
Bieber Style
Years went by for Jepsen, and in December of 2012, well-known Justin Bieber visited his home country, which also happens to be Canada. While there, he heard a song called “Call Me Maybe” and recognized it as an instant hit. Shortly after, Bieber, as well as other famous celebrities like Selena Gomez and Ashley Tisdale, made a YouTube video to the catchy song. The video eventually gained over 10 million views. Bieber discovered to his astonishment that the singer of “Call Me Maybe,” Carly Rae Jepsen, was an unsigned artist. Immediately, Bieber signed her to his label “Island Records.” This made Jepsen the first person to be signed by him.
Being #1
“It’s hard to believe at the moment. It’s definitely a surreal life that I’m in right now, but I’m enjoying every second of it,” says Jepsen about her huge hit, “It’s pretty crazy.” Since starting out in 2008, Carly Rae Jepsen is now world famous with “Call Me Maybe.” Her song has been at number one for 9 weeks in a row. As Yahoo Music states, “‘Call Me Maybe’ is the third #1 song in succession to log six or more weeks on top.” This ranking just shows how Jepsen has conquered the world by storm. Her success shows she is beyond ready for the release of her newest album, Kiss, which is expected to come out on September 18, 2012. In addition to her new album, Jepsen will perform as an opening act for Bieber later this month. Carly Rae Jepsen is a talented up and coming artist, and someone to look out for.
