With the final seasons of The Office and 30 Rock premiering, NBC aired the new hit comedy-drama Go On, starring Matthew Perry. The former Friends star plays Ryan King, the sports-radio host of “The Ryan King Show.”
After his wife dies, Ryan is forced to take some time off of work to join a support group in order to move on from the loss of his wife. When Ryan first starts attending the support group, he feels as if he does not need to attend the sessions. He refuses to open up to the people around him, although they are in the group for similar reasons, such as deaths of family members, cats, and divorce. Though he tries to get out of the therapy sessions, Ryan eventually realizes that he is comforted by a group of people suffering in some way who all attend therapy sessions that are run by a not-so-qualified therapist.
Ultimately, Go On is about members of a quirky support group who slowly learn to deal with their tragedies, and by doing so they grow closer to one another during every session. Throughout the series, the group members’ relationships become stronger as the characters begin to open up more and more to one another. The strengths of the show lie not only with Perry’s character, but also with the members of the support group, such as Everybody Hates Chris’s Tyler James Williams as Owen, a teenager coping with his brother’s skiing injury.
Critics have raved that Go On is a new and fresh addition to NBC’s lineup, so be sure to watch Go On Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
