Lincoln, the highly anticipated historical film directed by Steven Spielberg, came to theaters on November 16, 2012. Spielberg picked this date with a purpose in mind, fearing that if he released the movie before this year’s election, the movie would become a part of the political debate. The movie focused on the last two months of Lincoln’s life. During this period of time, President Lincoln was attempting to end the Civil War and also pass the 13th amendment, which would end slavery.
The movie does a great job of depicting Lincoln’s struggle with the opposing democratic party to get the amendment passed. The movie allows the audience to see that Lincoln was passionate about passing the amendment apart from its ability to help end the war. Lincoln worked very hard to accomplish these goals, and Spielberg artfully keeps this historical topic interesting. The movie also showed a little bit of Lincoln’s personality and helped the audience see Lincoln’s character outside of the presidency. Daniel Day Lewis, the British actor who played the President, did a wonderful job embodying Lincoln’s personal disposition and hard working nature as President. I would most definitely recommend Lincoln to anyone who is looking for an entertaining and also educational experience. Lincoln will definitely be up for some nominations this coming year at the Oscars.
