The film Life of Pi, directed by Ang Lee, is about Piscine Molitor Patel, better known as Pi, who is telling his story to another man who is interested in writing a novel about it. When he was a young boy, Pi was stranded on a boat with a large adult tiger in the middle of the Pacific ocean. His family had boarded a boat that would take them to Canada, but during a severe storm, the boat sank. Pi was fortunate enough to board a lifeboat. Richard Parker, the tiger, later appeared out of the covered section of the boat, forcing Pi to build a small raft and spend as much time off the boat as possible. Although he later comes upon an island, he must leave because of a strange properties of the island. After 227 days at sea, Pi ends up on the Mexican coast, safe and sound.
Life of Pi is a wonderful example of strong faith and an impossible friendship. Throughout the movie, Pi becomes closer to the tiger, Richard Parker, than he ever thought possible. His father had always thought of animals as simply that: animals. But Pi tests that belief as he continues his journey for survival with Richard Parker at his side. In order to complete his quest, Pi must have faith. Because Pi is a Christian, a Hindu, and a Muslim, he begs several gods to save him. His battle with faith is compelling and draws viewers to analyze their own beliefs. No matter how old you are or what religion you practice, Life of Pi is a stupendous movie and is definitely recommended.
