Spice World: The Spice Girls Movie Review

Old movies are the best movies. At least that was my reasoning when I decided to watch 1997’s Spice World, starring Melanie Chisholm, Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, and Victoria Beckham as fictional versions of themselves. These five girls made up Britain’s iconic girl band, The Spice Girls, who gained popularity in the mid 90’s and became “teen pop” sensations. Though it was a little before my generation’s time, anyone who thinks they have no idea who the Spice Girls are, I promise you, you’re wrong. Type “Wannabe” into YouTube, and you’ll recognize them.

Spice World stars the Spice Girls as fictional versions of themselves as they tour around London in their Union Jack covered tour bus. They fight crime, get into boat crashes, work for James Bond, and dodge tabloid paparazzi as they try and make it to their live concert. All while cracking corny jokes like the bad actors they are. In the film, the girls are continually referred to as Sporty Spice, Scary Spice, Ginger Spice, Baby Spice and Posh Spice, names coined by the media because of the girls differing personalities. This made it easy for fans to identify with at least one of the girls, contributing to their success.

Although reviewed aggressively by critics for its pre-teen toned plot and unrealistic scenes, the movie was a box office hit. According to the popular movie site, IMDB, it earned $77 million in theaters worldwide. It will never win an Oscar, but if you’re looking for a silly movie to curl up with a bowl of popcorn at a sleepover, this is a great movie for you.
