New and Improved Emojis

Apple released one of their biggest updates, IOS 10, on September 13. Apple released the new updates to better their phones and give them a new redesigned look. This update came with many new features, including a big change to the emojis. There are over a hundred newly designed emoji characters. Apple also added more family options and gender diverse emojis. Apple.com states that “Apple worked closely with Unicode Consortium to ensure that popular emoji characters reflected the diversity of people everywhere.”

Katelyn Ham recently updated her phone to IOS 10. She said, “I don’t like them, they look like android emojis, and they look more human like.” It is true Apple has made their new emojis more defined, human like, and they have added 5 more skin tones. According to emojipedia.org “Hundreds of emojis have had a makeover in IOS 10, with a completely new design that is sharper, more detailed, and less glossy.”

The IOS 9 emojis had one gender, doing a certain action or a certain job, but Apple has fixed that and has added more gender diverse and gender neutral emojis to the already existing characters. Now in IOS 10 more female athletes and female workers will be found. There are seventeen new female emojis and nine new male emojis. For example, the emoji with the man running, now also has a girl running. There is no longer just a construction man emoji there is also a construction woman emoji. There is a female police officer, a female guard, a woman golfing, a woman swimming, and many more new emoji choices for women. IOS 10 has brought new family emoji options too. Before there was only a choice of two parents but now IOS 10 has included a single parent option.

Apple has decided to replace the realistic gun emoji to a toy looking water gun to resolve the gun emoji debate and Apple also added a rainbow flag emoji to the flag section. Along with the new emojis, when typing in IMessage, the suggestion bar will  suggest an emoji based on the word or words being typed and if you just send one emoji the emoji will appear three times bigger than if you were to send multiple. “Apple is calling the update the biggest overhaul of its mobile operating system to date,” says digiday.com.
