Valentine’s Day: Friend or Foe?

There are many opinions regarding Valentine’s Day. Frankie Knoll (‘18) happens to be very neutral in her opinion on Valentines day; however, Maura Bellew (‘17) thinks strongly about the holiday, and thinks it’s a bit overdone.

In Frankie’s opinion, Valentine’s Day is actually just a normal day she spends with the people she loves. “I’ve never really celebrated Valentine’s Day since I’ve never a boyfriend, but I like to spend it with my friends and family. I basically see it as a normal day, its just everything is so pink,” says Frankie. She also really enjoys the big heart shaped chocolates her dad gets her every year. To her, Valentine’s Day isn’t that big of a deal, but is something worth acknowledging.

On the other hand, Maura thinks the holiday is a bit over celebrated and a tad over dramatic. “It’s a little overdone. I know Valentine’s Day is a day to show love, but shouldn’t you show someone you love them every day?” says Maura. She feels Valentine’s Day should be about doing something special to show others you love them, but you shouldn’t go overboard and act like February 14th is the only day you have to show your feelings for someone.

In my opinion, I agree with both sides. I do enjoy spending the day with my family and getting sweets, however; I also think the holiday is a little too over dramatic and everyday should be about showing love.
