Mrs. Alinda: A Profile of Service and Science

In Padua, Mrs. Alinda is a very busy teacher, handling most of the service activities in the building, as well as teaching multiple science courses. After graduating Padua Academy in 2005, Mrs. Alinda studied at the college of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and graduated with a major in chemistry and a minor in anthropology. When asked about what made her want to teach at the same school she attended, Mrs. Alinda said “When I was a senior in college, right after the financial ‘bubble burst’ a lot of my classmates had been talking about teaching as a backup. It kind of made me angry because I really do believe that teachers need to be passionate and gifted. I really didn’t have that much teaching experience so when I was thinking and praying of teaching here it worked because I wasn’t sure I was gifted about teaching, but I knew I was passionate about it here because I knew I bought into the school’s mission”.

Not only does Mrs. Alinda currently teach organic chemistry, sociology of service, chemistry, and social action and leadership, but she is also the school’s director of service. “I had gotten really passionate about getting involved in the community in college, especially Wilmington. When I came back, I didn’t want students to be as naive as I was. We spent four years in Padua and didn’t realize the needs in Wilmington”. Mrs. Alinda has become very successful in her new position as students have actively participated in fundraisers and service clubs who devote their time to organizations such as Urban Promise and Mom’s House.

When asked about Padua traditions Mrs. Alinda says that “As small as it is, my favorite Padua tradition is a yellow rose. We didn’t have convocation in my day, and the first time you really saw it was at Ring Mass. But there is something special about a symbol that seems to encapsulate a lot of what Padua means”.
