At the end of 2012 Pope Benedict XVI made a Twitter account named @pontifex. He already has approximately 1.2 billion followers and that number keeps growing. He started tweeting on December 12th saying, “Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart.” He tweeted this message in several different languages including Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, and French so he can connect with people all over the world. The first tweet was sent out by the Pope himself, but the ones to follow will be written by an assistant. All of the tweets will be pre-approved by the Pope, so no one will be putting words into his mouth. To prevent hacking, the tweets will be sent from the same computer and same person every time. The tweets will be sent around the times of major holidays and if any natural disasters happen to occur. The Pope believes that using Twitter will help him get his message across the world more quickly. He will be able to “talk” to teens and adults, spreading the Word of God to more people with ease.
