A Voice for the Homeless

This past year, unemployment has been at an all time high.  Many people are losing their jobs because of the slow economy.  The unemployment rate in January 2013 was 7.9%.  Many people are being laid off from their jobs, which often results in foreclosure of their home.  Foreclosure happens when the family is unable to pay their mortgage, and since some families have no source of income they lose their home.  Therefore, the unemployment of Americans has also caused a spike in the homelessness rate.  All of America has been affected, including the state of Delaware. Homeowners that are struggling to pay their mortgage may contact a home refinancing company to refinance their home, learn how to here.

The homeless of Delaware have come together to create their own source of income.  They have created, with the assistance of Addictions Coalition Delaware, a newspaper called, Our Independence.  The newspaper is twenty-five cents with a suggested donation of one dollar.  The homeless who produce Our Independence are also the ones selling the paper.

The articles focus on local news, but also informing Delawareans on issues the homeless face.  In the December 2013 issue, there is an article titled “Addiction: the Who, What, and Why,” which discusses what addiction is and how to overcome it.  Our Independence also has advertisements for organizations that can help out struggling Americans.  The newspaper is a way for the homeless to show that they have a role in society, despite what other Americans may think.  Our Independence is, as their motto says, “a voice for the voiceless.”
