Shakira: The Musician & Philanthropist

Well-known Columbian recording artist Shakira has a surprising past. Not only does she sing, but she gives back to various communities. Her past has lead her to live a life of heartfelt philanthropy.

Shakira grew up in a life of poverty. Her family went bankrupt when she was eight years old. At the age of 18, “she founded the Barefoot Foundation, a charity to help poor children in her native Colombia get an education,” says Daniela Deane of CNN in her article about Shakira. She felt the urge to grow as a human being, not as someone who is not relatable. She later turned towards UNICEF and became a goodwill ambassador.

In regards to music, Shakira has not hesitated to continue putting out albums. Her ninth album, self titled, just recently came out. Allan Raible of ABC News calls the album “stylistically diverse.” Shakira has been dabbling in various styles of music, even country! Her diversity is also sure to help her in judging contestants on The Voice. Alyssa M. likes Shakira’s music and stated, “I’ve liked pretty much every song since ‘Hips Don’t Lie’!”

Winning an Emmy award Best Reality-Competition Series, The Voice has certainly assisted in skyrocketing Shakira’s career. With views higher than ever before, the show has allowed her to give the audience a glance at her new album. She has performed her song with Blake Shelton, adding a country twang, and continues to sing week after week with the members of Team Shakira.

Regardless of her musical decisions, Shakira always places her family first. As a new mom, she has just begun her journey of patience, reward, and gratitude.
