The swim and dive team had a great season this year, finishing with a 6-4 record. Out of the sixteen girls on the team, eleven qualified for the state championship meet. The girls who qualified include: Cecily Gordon ‘12, Rosie Matich ‘12, Taylor Shelley ’12, Corrine Capodanno ’12, Claire Nester ‘13, Emily Petillo ‘13, Laura Milowicki ‘13, Samantha D’Amico ‘14, Shannon Steiner ‘14, and Kaitlyn Barry ‘15. Additionally, Padua’s diver, Alexis France ‘14, qualified for the diving state championship.
On Saturday, Padua finished 5th in the state. Padua swimmers were in the following events: 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, one meter diving, 100 butterfly, 200 free relay, 100 backstroke, and 400 free relay. Among these events, Padua swimmers obtained a vast amount of recognition as they placed in all events aforementioned. The girls 200 medley relay placed 14th in state. Corrine Capodanno ‘12 got for 4th in state for the 50 freestyle. In the girls one meter diving, Alexis France ’14 won 3rd in the state, with a score of 307.75. Corrine Capodanno ‘12 placed 5th in the state for the girls 100 freestyle. For the 100 butterfly, Cecily Gordo ‘12 placed 9th in state. The girls 200 free relay, Taylor Shelley ‘12, Corrine Capodanno ‘12, Laura Milowicki ‘13, and Samantha D’Amico ‘14 all placed 3rd in state. Taylor Shelley ‘12 placed 4th in state for the 100 backstroke. Furthermore, Taylor Shelley ‘12, Corrine Capodanno ‘12, Laura Milowick ‘13, and Samantha D’Amico ‘14 won 2nd in state for their 400 girls free relay.
Senior and captain of the swim team, Taylor Shelley, commented on her swim team experience, saying that, “I am really going to miss the team! It was so much fun the whole season and can’t wait to visit.” The swim team is nonetheless not just a group of swimmers, but the constant camaraderie each team mate offers ensured success. Each swimmer contributed to the overall performance on the team, and the they are already looking forward to next season.
