The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics

The Olympics are back! This year, the Winter Olympics are being held in Sochi, Russia, in February 2014. Everyone is excited to see how they will turn out. People are showing up to the actual event in Sochi,  and others are crowded around their screens, ready to see the amazing athletes compete this year, all routing for their own country.

The events in the Olympics this year include: alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, ski jump, ice hockey, bobsleigh, figure skating, skeleton, speed skating, and more. As of now, Germany is in the lead with seven gold medals, two silver, and one bronze. Canada is in second with four gold medals, four silver medals, and two bronze medals. America is currently in fifth place with four gold medals, two silver medals, and six bronze medals. Norway currently has the most medals overall, and is in third place.

A lot of exciting things are going on at the Olympics this time around. Martin Fourcade from France has already won his second gold medal for the Sochi Olympics. The women’s downhill medal competition had very surprising results. Sochi2014.com says, “Slovenia’s Tina Maze and Switzerland’s Dominique Gisin had identical times to the nearest hundredth of a second: 1 minute, 41.57 seconds.” They were both rewarded with a gold medal. Also, Natalie Geisenberger from Germany won luge’s women’s singles with a margin of 1.139 seconds, which is the biggest margin in the winter olympics for the luge event since 1964.

There are a couple of American athletes that everyone is excited about watching. Gracie Gold, a figure skater who is 18 years old, won a bronze medal for the United States. Bode Miller, who is known for being one of the most successful American alpine skiers of all time, tied for a bronze medal this year. This accomplishment made him the oldest skiiing medalist in the history of the olympics.
