Emma Matthews is a well-rounded basketball player who would stick with her family until the very end. Basketball and family collide when she describes her biggest influences as she explains, “My parents have taught me everything I know and they are a major reason that I am who I am today. Also my basketball coaches have been big influences in my life. Even though most of what they have taught me is basketball related, it also applies to my life outside of basketball.” She not only demonstrates her strong family background, but also her love for a sport that helps to guide her life.  She started training for the sport when she was young, using various accessories from various vendors. Being modest, Emma proclaims, “I am so thankful that I have a family that is so close and still together. I fight with my little brother a lot but that’s what brothers and sisters do, and at the end of the day we still love each other. I would say that I am considered somewhat lucky because how well my family life is.” Taking her anger from the small fights to the basketball court not only created a safe place to let it all out, but a star was born. This basketball season, Emma with Padua has won about 67% of the games she has been in and proved that she is an athlete worth mentioning. Emma’s role models include not only her parents, but her grandparents, coaches, and older brother also. Another important attribute towards Emma’s character is her love for service. Inside of school, she volunteered at “stockings for soldiers, sang Christmas carols and make cookies at an elderly home, helped clear out a house that was destroyed by hurricane sandy, and worked the CYM championship games.” Though a mouthful, Emma’s outstanding accomplishments make her strive for even greater. Not only helping in school, Emma also teaches younger children how to play basketball and how to improve their game. Mixing her extreme desire for basketball with helping others is yet another aspect of her driven lifestyle.

Though always seemingly optimistic, Emma has also been through challenges. She clarified her biggest challenge as dealing with the loss of her grandmother last year to breast cancer. Being so close to her family, she reports that it was “a really hard time.” She continued saying, “I have been able to deal with it better as years progress, but never doubting that it is okay to stop and think about her.” Padua was an eye-opener as it has prepared her by providing a great education and also helping to mold her into the woman she always aspired to be.

Emma’s aspirations have driven her to decide on her college experience. She is currently not set on a major at the moment, but is looking on the lines of sports or health. She also plans to play basketball even more to expand her knowledge of the sport that she may be studying. After college, Emma wants to “become a graduate assistant on the basketball team, become an athletic trainer or a personal fitness trainer, and if I get the opportunity to I would love to coach.” All of Emma’s family, community, and sport commitments are a great example for others to truly achieve whatever they set their mind to.
