Padua’s Monogram Trend

Paduas+Monogram+Trend

The trends of monogrammed items at Padua is on its way up, and seemingly here to stay. Monograms are initials embroidered or adhered on a surface in the format of first initial, last initial, middle initial. This old school embroidery has made a major comeback in recent years. Monograms can now be featured on the Padua uniform fleece as well as items like backpacks, necklaces, cups, and phone cases.

For a simple initial embroidery style, monograms have an in depth origin. Many credit the modern monogram to the Art Deco movement on the 1920s, but monograms truly originated in Greek cities, and were prominently used on coins. This Greek design would come to influence designers all over Europe, primarily in Paris and Milan, and eventually migrate to America where it was plastered on everything from silverware to stationary.

Padua has embraced the trend starting with the monogrammed fleece being added to the uniform. Mrs. Manelski, the Dean of Students, said that, “The monogramed fleeces were originally suggested as a way to identify the jackets, but as soon as I saw them, I knew Padua would love it. I think the fleeces embody what Padua students are, feminine and classic.” The student body seems to agree. Sophomore Rachel Baker feels that, “Monograms, in moderation, are good and a great accent to the uniform.”
