The 54th Grammy Award Show is music’s biggest night. Artists from all genres and backgrounds come together and compete for the most prestigious awards. Any music fan, no matter if you are into country, pop, R&B, or rock, would have enjoyed this year’s Grammys. Performances from the biggest stars such as Carrie Underwood and Tony Bennett, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, the Foo Fighters, and the Beach Boys brought the night to life.
The biggest performance of the night was Adele’s return performance, where she sang “Rolling in the Deep.” After losing her ability to sing and having laser surgery, America awaited the part of the show where Adele would sing for the first time since the surgery. Adele’s performance was nearly perfect. Absent of the over the top light shows and dance routines, Adele’s simple presentation of the song perfectly complemented her big voice. The crowd of course loved her performance; the whole theater was on their feet clapping and cheering.
Adele walked away from the Grammys with all six awards she had been nominated for as well, including album of the year, marking her as one of the best singers of our generation. Some of the other award winners were Bon Iver for Best New Artist, (a performer no one had heard of before, but inevitably one of these “underground” type artists always win at least one award), and Tony and Bennet and Amy Winehouse for Best Pop Duo/Group Award. The night was also a tribute to Whitney Houston. Almost all the artists that spoke or presented awards said a few words about her, and the host, LL Cool J, even opened the show with a prayer in her honor. Jennifer Hudson sang Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You”, which gave me chills. Her strong voice and her humble performance proved that she was the perfect choice for the tribute performance. The 54th Grammys were an all-around hit, with great performances and tributes, although the commercial breaks could have been a little shorter. I will be sure to tune in for next year’s Grammys, and I would recommend everyone else to as well!
