“The Last Good Movie I Saw” – Emily Gray

Sophomore, Emily Gray, recently saw Ron Howard’s “The Heart of the Sea” at the Movies 10 cinema. This movie was based on the widely known work Moby Dick and was told in the perspective of the last survivor of the ship, Essex.

In this movie, Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick, interviews first mate, Owen Chase, who tells the story of their battle with the whale. His powerful story inspires Herman Melville to write his famous Moby Dick. Emily says, “Despite its awful reviews, I thought it was a great movie. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 43%, but if I were to rate it, I would give it at least an 85%.”

Gray says her favorite part of the movie was, “when they were in a life raft, they were starving and resorted to drawing lots to see who would end up shooting themselves so that the others would have food to eat. The captain ended up drawing the short stick, but his cousin, one of the crew members on the raft, told him that because he was the captain he shouldn’t have to kill himself and they should draw again. The captain, however, told him that because he is a man of his word, he would do it. When it came time to shoot the captain the cousin quickly turned the gun on himself and killed himself instead.” She liked that part because the crew member was willing to sacrifice himself in order to save his family.

As for the moral of the movie, Gray says, “I you should stay strong no matter what happens and always keep fighting.” Emily Gray loved this movie and would recommend others to see it as well.
