Bae: Should the slang term be eliminated from our text talk?

Recently, technology, social media sites, and smart-phone apps have progressively played a bigger and bigger role in the lives of all kinds of people around the world. With apps like Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat gaining extreme popularity, specifically amongst teens, new slang terms or texting terms have arisen. One of these terms includes “bae,” which means “before anyone else.” Most teens use this term to address their significant other, or to express gratitude or appreciation to a person who has done something nice for you. For example, a person who covers your shift at work last minute would be “bae.” If someone gets you ice cream on a day when you are feeling down, they would be “bae.” Or, if Mr. Beno buys the yearbook editors Panera when he makes them stay for 5 hours after school, he would be “Baeno!” It terms of a best friend or significant other though, “bae” is most typically used as a replacement or shorter form of the more classic “babe.”
“I say bae all the time!” shares senior Abby Strusowski. “I say it to my dog, I say it to my mom, and I say it to all of my friends!”
“I think bae is a nice word,” agrees senior Dana Caracci. “It’s a term of endearment, and if people wish to use it they should! I’m bae, you’re bae, we’re all bae.”
“I also use bae all the time,” says senior Maiya Dendy. “I like how it’s a quick, different way to show someone how important they are to you.”
“Bae” has grown on many teenagers, merging its way into their vocabulary. However, not all teens are in favor of its growing popularity.
“I think it takes away from the sentimentality of other names to call significant others,” shares senior Becca Brown. “It’s become overused and is often in a mocking way. It further proves that our generation isn’t headed in a good direction, and I don’t think the term needs to stay around.”
Whether a person is in favor of the term “bae” or not though, it will be up to our generation as a whole to watch and decide how long it will actually stick around.
