Leadership and Lollipops

On February 26th, 2015, another Big Sister and Little Sister event took place. We’ve gone from meeting each other, to doing service hours, to trading gifts, to learning how we can be leaders. This event was about how we are all leaders, sometimes without even realizing it.

The event started out with Mrs. Burris, a Big sister/ Little sister administrator, asking us if we thought we were a leader, and it was a surprise that very few people raised their hands. Mrs. Burris then proceeded to tell us how we are all leaders, even if we aren’t in charge of a club, or captain of a sport team. After this, we were showed a TED Talk, where Drew Dudley talked about how a person can change another’s life. He told a story of how on his last day of university, a girl came up to him and told him a story of how on her first day of university she wanted to leave; Drew had the power of changing her mind, though Drew was handing out lollipops to everyone, and he told the guy next to the girl to give the girl the lollipop; it turns out they have been dating ever since that day. Later on, he got an invitation to their wedding, which shocked him because he couldn’t even remember this event. “The video was empowering for me,” said Freshman little sister Glennamarie Rivers. “I put into perspective how much of a difference we can make in the lives of our peers.” This was a wonderful example as how we can change someone’s whole life with just being kind or funny.

As the event came to an end, twelve volunteers were asked to come to the stage cafeteria; they were given bags of lollipops and told to wait at each of the four exits around the caferteria. Each person was handed two lollipops as they left the event, with instructions to give one to someone else, and tell them something nice or thoughtful they didn’t know about themselves. The event ended with the question: What’s Your Lollipop Moment?
