Every year, both in fall and spring, campus minister, Mrs. Vavala, organizes a religious retreat known throughout the school as Encounter. The retreat is made up of about 8 team leaders, who have gone on the retreat before and are willing to share their experiences with God with others. Those attending leave behind their phones, computers, and schoolwork in order to bond with each other on the trip and grow closer to God. “As a team leader, it was such an amazing experience to go back with a new group of girls. It was an eventful weekend and I’ve gotten to know people a lot better”, says senior Annabeth B. The upperclassmen spend four days living together in a house in Haverford, Pennsylvania and get to know each other through activities and delicious meals. “My favorite part of Encounter would probably be coming together as one and enjoying our time with each other,” Annabeth says.
The Encounterites leave one Thursday after school and return home on Sunday. During the weekend, girls break off into small groups and discuss their faith journeys with God. Girls return home with new friendships and a sense of the role God plays in their lives. “Even though I see all the girls from the retreat in the halls, I’ll still miss that small house filled with so much love”, says Annabeth.
