On March 1, the whole city of Wilmington could hear the crack of the bats as the Padua softball team was holding tryouts. Everyone at Padua Academy knew that spring was coming as soon as they saw many girls lugging in their giant softball bags. At the tryouts, held at Alapocus, the coaches were looking for players who were willing to work hard to be a good addition to the team. Compared to last year, they were a lot of freshmen who tried out. Around 40 girls in all tried out for the softball team. Unfortunately, this year cuts had to be made, and 15 girls did not make the team. The JV team has 13 players and Varsity has 15 players. This year, Varsity has played two scrimmages and will play 18 games, not including the State Tournament. JV will play a total of 13 games. Both JV and Varsity won their first games against Appoquinimink High School, starting the season on a high-note. There is much anticipation for the upcoming season and Ashley Stull (‘15) predicts that it will be “amazing!”
Over spring break, Padua played Charter. Going into the sixth inning, Padua was losing 2 to 0. Shannon McGee (‘15) had a hit that brought in Kelly Ryan (‘12), bringing the score to 2 to 1. Shannon later scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Melissa Rozulamski to tie the game. Cam Simendinger (‘15) hit a double to center field when the bases were loaded to bring in the go ahead runs. In the last inning, Melissa struck out Charter’s best hitter to win the game. Padua’s Varsity team’s record is now six wins and zero losses. Looks like PASB is shaping up to have an awesome season!
