The streets of Philadelphia were flooded in black and orange this Sunday as the Flyers sent the Penguins back to their Pittsburgh habitat after game 6 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. On April 22nd, the Flyers defeated Pittsburgh 5-1, advancing to the next round of the playoffs. Starting the game for the Flyers was Scott Hartnell, Claude Giroux, and Jaromir Jagr up front, Matt Carle and Erik Gustafsson on defense, and Ilya Bryzgalov in goal. The energy from Philly fans in Wells Fargo was incredible. The stands were filled with orange t-shirts jumping and screaming when Giroux gave the Flyers the first goal of the game in first period. Hartnell followed up with his own goal putting the score at 2-0 Flyers ending first period. Second period began and Philadelphia still looked promising on the ice. Gustafsson scores his first playoff goal making the score 3-0. Penguins stepped up to get their first goal of the game shortly after – but this didn’t worry Philadelphia fans at all. Moments later Danny Briere puts the score at 4-1, refusing the Penguins to come anywhere near Philadelphia’s lead. Pittsburgh felt the nerves in third period. Penguins were faced with a do-or-die moment. They were down by three with a period left to go. If they lost this game they’d be knocked out of the 2012 playoffs.
Philly fans are celebrating because this is exactly what had happened. With 3 minutes remaining in the third, Pens pulled their goaltender for a 2 man advantage. The time is ticking, only seconds remain on the clock. Brayden Schenn scores on Pittsburgh’s empty net with only seven seconds left to go on the clock. The Flyers won. Philadelphia fans in Wells Fargo Center stand to chant “Na, na, na, na, hey, hey, hey, goodbye!” to the Penguins as they’re bumped out of the playoffs and sent back home. It was a successful win for Philadelphia. They had good momentum, playing smart and hard in each period (I’m sure many Philadelphia fans were hoping for a brawl between Hartnell and Crosby, but surprisingly, there were little to no fights in game 6). The Flyers played as the better team and their 4-2 series victory was well-earned. Now, Philadelphia awaits the results of our next opponent in the second round of Stanley Cup Playoffs. So, the question is, which team will be the Flyers next victim?
