Being postponed several times, the highly anticipated Padua vs. St. Mark’s volleyball game was finally played on October 11, 2012. The back to back JV and Varsity games gathered many Padua students, parents, teachers, and fans who filled the stands for both games.
After their victory over Ursuline earlier in the week, the JV team confidently took the court for their eighth game in the season. “We were very excited yet nervous about the game,” sophomore Caitlin Harris commented. With their 8-0 record, the Pandas defeated the Spartans in two games, winning by two in each. Although the games were close, Padua held on strong for the win. “Our practice really paid off, and I’m so proud of our performance,” Caitlin added.
With the Padua Academy Dance Team performing to hype up the fans, the Varsity team began with a great start, winning the first game 25 to 23. The Spartans took a lead over the Pandas after winning the second game 25 to 18, but Padua regained focus and determination to win the third. St. Mark’s came back to win the fourth game, tying up the score of the games to 2-2. In the fifth and final game, Padua and St. Mark’s battled for the victory, but the Pandas came up short and were defeated by two. Padua kept their heads held high, and withheld positive attitudes after the game. “We played the best we have ever played,” Sophomore Sarah Wiley said, “and we didn’t get down on ourselves after the loss.”
On October 23, Padua and St. Mark’s played at St. Mark’s School for the Spartan’s senior night. Once again, Padua’s JV defeated St. Marks in three games, but Varsity’s game became more intense. After losing the first two games 13-25 and 18-25, the Pandas came back to beat the Spartans in the third game 30-28. After nearly a two and a half hour match, the Spartans defeated the Pandas in the fourth game.
It is expected that Padua and St. Mark’s will meet once again in the state tournament.
