Gymnastic Champions Take on Philly

On November 9th, thousands of fans took their seats at the Wells Fargo Center for the 2012 Kellogg’s Gymnastics Tour of Champions. The tour focused on Olympians such as the gold medal winning team best known as the “Fierce Five” and the men’s olympic team. Fans awaited the performances from All-Around Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas, Floor Gold Medalist Aly Raisman, 2011 World Champion Jordyn Wieber, 2008 All-Around Silver Medalist Nastia Liukin, and Jake Dalton and Jonathan Horton from the Men’s Olympic Team.

The show began with many of the local Philadelphia gymnasts performing a dance routine. The performance was followed by the Olympic Gymnasts taking the floor accompanied by other additional World Champions. Unfortunately, only three members of the gold medal women’s team were able to perform on tour. Kyla Ross did not tour with the team and although Vault Silver Medalist Mckayla Maroney was present for the show, she was unable to perform because of an injury from earlier on in the tour. Nastia Liukin, however, did tour and performed many artistic routines that involved her flying around the stadium on ropes above the audience.

Throughout the night, all of the athletes performed routines on the uneven bars, balance beam, high bar, trampoline or a rectangle trampoline, rings, and the floor to many modern pop songs. “It was truly an amazing night,” sophomore Katie Blythe said about the show. “I enjoy watching gymnastics on TV during the Olympics, but it was even better to see them in person.” The Kellogg’s tour brought a very exciting and entertaining night to Philadelphia and it is hoped by many that they return next year.
