The 16th annual Philadelphia Marathon Weekend began on Saturday November 17 to Sunday, November 18. On these two days there were four different marathons, two per day. On Saturday, the Kids Fun Run and the Rothman Institute 8K marathons took place. On Sunday, the Philadelphia Half Marathon and Full Marathon took place. The event attracted about 40,000 runners and spectators. The race started with the opening of a free Health and Fitness Expo at the Philadelphia Convention Center.
The Rothman Institute was an eight kilometer run. It started at 7:30 a.m. and was on 22nd street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The top five runners in each age group, spanning from 12 to 70, won an award. The first place for men and first place for women each won $1,000. After the race, the participants received a t-shirt, refreshments, and a certificate. The Kids Fun Run was filled with great activities centered on kids. It started at 10:30 a.m. and was open to kids between the ages of six to fourteen. The focus of the run was having fun, not winning. They each received a t-shirt, certificate, and medal for finishing the course. Afterwards, there was face painting, arts and crafts, and an obstacle course.
The Philadelphia Half Marathon kicked off on Sunday at 7a.m. It was located on 22nd street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and was a 13.1 mile challenge. They had seven hours to complete it and were taken through the most historic parts of Philadelphia. When finished, they received a t-shirt, refreshments, a medal, and a certificate. The first place award winner received $2,500. Anyone could participate from the ages of 14 and up. The Philadelphia Full Marathon was the most difficult race of all. Participants had to run a 10k, 13.1 miles, and a 30k. There were several water stations and places where spectators could watch the runners pass. Every finisher received a t-shirt, refreshments, a medal, and a certificate. Tons of people came out to cheer on the runners and the winner received a prize of $3,500.
