Narendra Modi (India)

Narendra Modi was elected prime minister of India in 2014. He was born into a small community but devoted himself from a young age to having a successful career. Now in place as one of India’s most powerful individuals, Modi has certainly gained the platform he desired. He has been a proponent of foreign investment in an attempt to grow business and economy, decreasing support for social welfare in the process. Modi promised a developed foreign policy during his election, including goals to strengthen relationships with neighboring nations, allow individual states or cities to form relations with other nations or areas, and developing strategic trading partnerships, though relations with Pakistan in particular remain tense, especially in the disputed region of Kashmir. Representing a Hindu nationalist party, he has enjoyed a highly respectable amount of support from Indian citizens, despite controversy—namely questions about his role in an attack on Muslims in Gulbarg in 2002.
