Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s day is celebrated on February 14 every year. Valentine’s day dates back to the time of the Roman Empire during the reign of Claudius II, 270 A.D. Claudius did not want men to marry during the war because he believed single men made better soldiers. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and executed by order of the Emperor on February 14. While in jail, Valentine wrote a love note to the jailor’s daughter, signing it, “From your Valentine.”

Valentine’s day is a day where people show their love for one another. To show their love, people exchange gifts such as chocolates, cards, balloons, and flowers with their friends, family, or a special valentine. People may also go to dinner, parties, vacation, or see a movie. Freshman, Logan L. said, “I am planning on spending the day at home, in my pajamas, catching up on my favorite TV shows on Netflix. I love how everyone seems happier, and how there are hearts everywhere.” On Valentine’s day people are elated when they receive presents from others, because it shows them that people care about him or her.
