Breaking news comes from Vatican City this morning as Pope Benedict XVI announces that he will be resigning as the leader of the church, effective February 28th. A Pope has not resigned in the past 600 years. The last Pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII in 1415. The pope claims that his “advanced age” and “diminishing strength” are reasons for his resignation. He is doing this for “the good of the church.” Pope Benedict XVI has led the church since 2005, succeeding Pope John Paul II. By mid-march the Vatican is expected to hold a conclave to elect a new Pope.
