Mean Girls to Mean Moms?

For the last decade now, Mean Girls, a comedy based on books by parenting author Rosalind Wiseman, has been a beloved movie of people of all ages. In 2011, seven years after the original Mean Girls premiered, director Melanie Mayron attempted a Mean Girls 2. While Mean Girls 2 only received 4/10 stars and not much favorable feedback, the rumor of a possible additional spin off of Mean Girls, Mean Moms, has had nothing but a positive public response. In fact, one of the first tweets that comes up when searching Mean Moms on Twitter is, “Lol if ever Mean Moms is legit, I hope it doesn’t turn out like Mean Girls 2 hahaha.”

The Mean Moms buzz began over the past few days, when The Kardashian Reactions Twitter and Instagram parody accounts posted a fake poster in promotion of it, saying, “Omg there is going to be a mean girls sequel called Mean Moms. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.” This poster circulated throughout social media, encouraging the idea that Sandra Bullock and Cameron Diaz would star in the movie alongside Jennifer Aniston. While Bullock and Diaz have not confirmed to star in the movie just yet, New Line Cinema has confirmed that Jennifer Aniston has. Social-media posts also claimed that the film is a sequel to Mean Girls, while it is actually not. The important distinction between the two films is that Mean Girls was a Paramount picture, and Mean Moms will be produced my New Line Cinema, with a focus on the world of competitive parenting.

While May 8th, 2015 was supposed to be the original release date for Mean Moms, New Line has withdrawn that date due to still being in the process of developing the film with TV director Beth McCarthy-Miller. The writing team of Sean Anders and John Morris are also rewriting Mean Moms, to have it focus on “a happily married mother of two who moves from small-town America to the high-class suburbs and faces the cutthroat world of competitive parenting.”

“I think that Mean Moms would be a disgrace to the Mean Girls franchise,” shares Victoria Panzera (’15). “I would see it, but I would have reservations towards seeing it because I would not want it to tarnish the Mean Girls legacy.”

Even though it may not premier sooner than later, Mean Moms sounds promising for any lover of Mean Girls or comedy movies, and is something to definitely keep eyes and ears open for in the future!
