Review: The 2015 MTV Movie Awards
The biggest stars and the best movies of 2014 were celebrated at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, which took place on Sunday, April 12, at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Unlike the Oscars, which also honor filmmaking, the MTV Movie Awards’ winners are decided based on the votes of fans. In addition, the nominees are more familiar to teens and young adults. Comedian Amy Schumer was the host this year, and the hilarity she brought to the show was unforgettable.
Some highlights from the night included the success of The Fault in Our Stars, which won three awards––Movie of the Year, Best Kiss (Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort), and Best Female Performance (Shailene Woodley). John Green, who wrote the best-selling novel The Fault in Our Stars, began his heartwarming speech with, “I had nothing to do with the making of this this movie, but I was the first to the microphone.” He continued to thank all the people involved with the movie as well as his friend, Esther Earl, who was the inspiration for the book.
In addition, Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) took home the award for Best Male Performance, while Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) won an award for Breakthrough Performance. The third movie in The Hunger Games movie series, Mockingjay Part 1, received the awards for Best Musical Moment (Jennifer Lawrence) and Best On-Screen Transformation (Elizabeth Banks).
I enjoyed the MTV Movie Awards a lot, especially with the funny and touching acceptance speeches. The night also featured a performance from Fall Out Boy, making the show even better in my opinion. Lauren Pala (’18) says, “I thought it was a very exciting show. It had a nice memorial to Paul Walker, great nominees, and hints of bold hidden messages.” I am definitely looking forward to the show next year!
