The Pledge’s Importance

The Pledge of Allegiance is recited all over the U.S. every day, but has recently faced controversy. The source of the debate comes from an addition made by Congress in 1954 to the Pledge, when “under God” was included. This has recently sparked some concerns, especially one family in particular.

The questionable oath was brought up by an unidentified family of a student in Boston stating that the Pledge is in opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment of the Massachusetts Constitution. This act was marked as the first case tried at the state level regarding “under God.”

Saying the pledge is not usually seen as saying a prayer, but in this case, it was to be reexamined. Padua student Taylor R. commented on how God should be included because, “It is important to people who are Christian.”

So far, every previous attempt to get rid of the “under God” element of the Pledge has failed, especially when faced with the fact that no one has been forced to say the Pledge since 1943.

Although some are in strong disagreement over the Pledge of Allegiance controversy, some are still in full approval. Taking away the this part could leave those who say it proudly left out of the discussion. Students at Padua, like Tayl0r, say that the pledge can “affect students emotionally.”

Overall, the “under God” addition to the Pledge of Allegiance is an important aspect to some, yet sometimes not to others. With this notion, it is important to realize each characteristic of Pledge as a whole.
