The New Executive Officers for Next Year

The executive officer elections are over and the results are in. The new executive officers are Veronica Cantoran-Torres, Grace DiGiovanni, Anna Gallo, Susannah Snellgrove, and Carter Vaughn. These five girls campaigned for several weeks to try to persuade the student body to vote for them.

The students running for Student Council Executive Officers prepared posters, speeches and treats for their campaign. Though that sounds like a lot of work, some students just did what came natural to them. “This is something that is spontaneous, and you didn’t really plan it out. I had worked it out, since our budget is $25, to do it in two days. One day, I would do something at first lunch, and the other second lunch, so I would have two different crowds,” commented Veronica Cantoran-Torres. Though campaigning can come easy for some people, it still can have some sort of challenge for the student to overcome. “Of course you can’t reach 600, 300, 400 people every day with a budget of $25. It can’t happen,” stated, Veronica.

The budget for the campaign was not the only difficulty that the students had to overcome. “Having to get over my nerves of having to talk to the whole school,” said Carter Vaughn. Public speaking is a common fear in many people, but everyone running for Student Council Executive Officers had to give a speech to the entire freshmen, sophomore, and junior classes. Speeches can be hard to write because the candidates need to know what people want to hear in order to get more votes for themselves. “I thought ‘What do people want to hear?’; I tried to make it not generic, but something that would’ve passed, and I wouldn’t get yelled at for saying things that were inappropriate. I had my friends help me because they would say, ‘People would want to hear this’ [or] ‘People would not want to hear this’, things like that,” specified Veronica. The candidates said that they tried to be relate to the other students because they thought it would compel students to vote for them.

The speeches took place on May 4 in the cafeteria. The following day, May 5, in homeroom, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors voted on the five girls they wanted to become their new Student Council Executive Officers. The announcement was made over the loudspeaker during last period to inform the entire student body who the new executive officers.  When asked how they felt about winning the elections, they simply couldn’t believe it. “Honestly, it still feels so surreal. I still can’t fully comprehend that I’m on executive board. I feel like I’m still campaigning. It’s really fun,” commented Veronica. All the elected girls are excited to be part of the executive board. “[I’m] excited but also nervous because I know that a lot of the student executives [in the past] have done a great job, and I just wanna my class and my school proud and really make a year that’s something to be proud of,” said Carter.
