8. Clark Kent, better known as Superman, is probably one of the most famous superheroes from DC Comics. The original design for Superman was a bald villain who wanted to dominate the world, but the character was given a new look based on real people. Superman first appeared in comic books in 1938 and given his own comic book series in 1939.
7.Captain America is a Marvel Comics superhero who has sold almost 210 million comic books as of 2007. Steve Rogers was turned into the Captain when he was injected with a serum to help with the United States war. The first Captain America comic was put on sale in December 1940.
6. Along with Spiderman, Thor is a Marvel Comic superhero created by Stan Lee. Thor is the god of lightning from Asgard from Norse mythology. The first Thor comic was released in August 1962 in the Journey into Mystery series.
5. The Hulk is the alternate ego of Bruce Banner that was created when he is exposed to a gamma bomb explosion. Hulk is a manifestation of all the negative emotion that Banner felt because of his traumatic childhood experience. He is said to be a combination of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein.
4. The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic was released in May of 1984 in a comic book convention in New Hampshire. TMNT is about four turtle that were mutated and turned into four giant teenage turtles that are trained in martial arts by a rat named Splinter, who is a mutant himself. The turtles are better known for starring in the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon which was first released in 1987.
3. Tony Stark developed an iron suit so that he could defend against communists and other Vietnamese agents. He then became Iron Man, but it was later decided that Stark would battle things other than the communists, like personal conflict. The first comic that starred only Iron Man was released in 1968.
2. The Green Lantern is a group of superheroes published by DC Comics that are sworn to protect the universe with their rings of power. There have been several different Green Lanterns that were showcased in the comic, such as Hal Jordan, who starred in the movie Green Lantern (2011). DC Comics re-released the Green Lantern comic in 2011, after the premiere of the movie.
1. Wolverine is a mutant with razor-sharp claws and keen animal instincts. He is often shown as one of the X-Men, and occasionally as an Avenger. Wolverine has placed on several lists for the best comic book characters of all-time, and even placed #1 on the Top 200 Comic Book Characters of All Time for Wizard magazine.
