“A Longwood Garden Christmas”

A+Longwood+Garden+Christmas

When Pierre S. du Pont planted his first garden in Longwood, in the early 1900’s, he didn’t know that he was founding what would eventually become such a huge attraction that people would come from miles away to see. Now, Longwood as we know it has evolved into a massive garden with a cafe, gift-shop and conservatory.

For some people, braving the cold to see a garden filled with lights is not something that sounds like fun, but perhaps those people have never been to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Upon entering the grounds of Longwood during the Christmas season, the trees at the entrance are lit up, and there is an overwhelming sense of holiday cheer that is felt from the second you enter the property, before you even park your car.  Then while wandering the pathways around the outside of the gardens, there are a myriad of Christmas trees, some lit up in elegant all-white lights, some with lights of a variety of primary colors, and even some with environmentally-friendly edible ornaments that contain food for birds and squirrels.  Some shimmering white-lit trees appear to be floating on the water in the ponds and brightly lit snowflakes hanging from tall trees create a winter wonderland where families and couples walk holding hands and taking pictures.  Also an outside attraction, is a popular fountain show that displays water accompanied by changing color schemes. It is currently closed for renovation, but many visitors plan to return with the promise of a bigger and better fountain display next season.

When garden tourists want to take a break from the chilly temperatures, there is an enormous conservatory with several displays for people of all ages. There are plenty of plants and flowers to stop and gaze at, and an entire section that is aimed for young children looking to get out some energy and explore. This area even features soft garden flooring. Also found in the conservatory is one of my personal favorite exhibits, the room filled with Christmas trees decorated by schools from all over the area. One of my favorite memories from elementary school was making snowmen ornaments with my second grade class and then taking a field trip to see them on display at Longwood. Nearly 20 schools from the Delaware Valley participated in this years bird-themed tree decorating, all coming up with creative ways to make ornaments beautifully resembling penguins, flamingos, cardinals, and even owls.

It is evident after spending time at Longwood that it is a great way for people of all ages to get in the holiday spirit.Padua Freshman, Angela Akumiah says, “I always look forward to going to Longwood Gardens during the Christmas season. It’s one of my favorite things about the holidays.” Even though some people were working outside in frigid temperatures, every employee was exceptionally friendly.  I personally would recommend Longwood to anyone that wanted to make holiday memories with their family and friends, and maybe even start a new Christmas tradition. Although it may have been more enjoyable if it wasn’t so cold, overall, I had a wonderful experience at Longwood Gardens and look forward to my next visit.
