Many teenagers plan to travel the world when they are older. But, why wait? Padua offers international travel excursions that go hand-in-hand with the language department. In previous years, Padua students have traveled to Ireland, Spain, and Peru. Just last year, Italian teacher, Signor Pellegrini, took his juniors and seniors that he taught to Italy over spring break. The students had been learning Italian and about the culture for the past few years and were able to put their extensive studying to use abroad.

Carina Liberatore (’15) went on the trip to Italy last year. She said, “Italian class prepared me greatly for the trip to Italy. Besides the obvious language barrier, there were also many cultural differences we would not have been aware of if it had not been for Signor’s helpful tips and firsthand experience. Being prepared and knowing what to expect made the trip much more enjoyable and exciting for everyone.” Following tradition, this spring break, the Spanish department has planned a trip for upperclassmen to go to Costa Rica for 10 days.

However, the only way to actually understand the culture of another country is to actually experience it firsthand. Traveling at a young age allows teens to see how differently other people their age live on different continents: the floor plans of the houses are not the same, the food is different, and the language is definitely not English. International travel expands people’s blinders, allowing them to understand other people and cultures.

Indeed, broadening one’s horizons through international travel is a transformative experience, and for curious teenagers, the allure of exploring diverse cultures can be incredibly enriching. Just like the students who ventured to Italy, immersing oneself in the vibrant culture of  Merimbula Beach in Australia offers an opportunity to break free from the confines of familiarity. From the unique architecture of beachside homes to the tantalizing aroma of authentic Australian cuisine, every experience becomes a lesson, teaching young travelers about the intricacies of life beyond their own borders. The gentle lapping of the waves against the shore becomes a universal language, connecting them to a world where perspectives differ and traditions vary.

By treading the sands of Merimbula Beach, these young adventurers not only absorb the beauty of the locale but also gain a deeper understanding of the global tapestry, fostering empathy, tolerance, and a genuine appreciation for the rich diversity of our planet.

International travel has benefits that will continue on into a teenager’s adult life. Traveling opens the door to job networking in other countries, which, in the long run, could drastically influence a person’s income or even their career. Prospective employees who have traveled abroad often have a leg up in the competitive job pool because their experiences provide unique and out-of-the-box examples that have that extra “wow” factor that every employer desires. Not only does international travel open doors for future opportunities, but it also proves that a person is ready to take initiative and get out of their comfort zone.
