On Thursday November 1st Blue Gold ambassadors and members went to the University of Delaware for the Project Unify Conference. The conference was an all day event run by members of YAC students form varying schools in Delaware involved in Blue Gold, Special Olympics, and Project Unify. The day consisted of relaying information to the students and teachers through videos, guest speakers, Q&A, and activities. There were multiple videos shown displaying the purpose of Project Unify. Four guest speakers were in attendance: Matt Denn, the Lieutenant Governor; Kayla Miller, a member of the University of Delaware Women’s Basketball team; Kevin Charles, a member of the Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA); and Erahm Charles, a Film Producer and the co-creator of Teen Truth.
The Lieutenant Governor spoke in the morning about integrating kids with disabilities and those without disabilities, important aspect for both parties. Kayla Miller verbalized the importance of the partner program with the Special Olympics players. Kevin Charles, spoke about Special Olympics and Project Unify. Following these three speakers the YAC members gave presentation on unified sports, spread the word to end the R-word, and raised awareness about the Polar Bear Plunge. After the information was presented to the students, the teachers were taken to the hall to have a Q&A while the students did activities that sparked teamwork as well as inspiration for activities and events at their own schools. Following lunch, Erahm Christopher, had an interactive presentation on the unification of all people. The last activity was for all participants to create a Project Unify action plan for their school. The conference was a mixture of obtaining informatin through both presentations and activities.The general consensus of the Blue-Gold members was that the time spent on activities was the best part of the conference because they were able to get involved. The Project Unify action plan created by the Blue-Gold members at this conference will be implemented into this 2012-2013 school year
