Currently in Delaware, there is almost a $10,000 gap between the wages of men and the wages of women. The average wage of a working woman in Delaware is $40,500, while the average wage of a man is $50,400. That means for every dollar a man makes, a woman only makes 80 cents. Imagine what could be done with an extra $10,000. “If I received that extra money, I would give some to my family to help with monthly bills or groceries, and put the majority of it in my college fund or wedding fund. Something for the future,” says Abigail McGowan (‘16). When it comes to equal pay for both sexes, Delaware is ranked 14th in the nation. Many families are supported by the income of women, and the smaller wages make it a little more difficult to get by. Women work just as hard as men, sometimes even harder, but they still don’t get an equal amount of money. “I think that women are not paid as much as men because of olden times when men thought they were superior. They still have that attitude that was passed down from their ancestors,” says McGowen. Women are an important part of society and should not be paid less than men just because of their sex.
