Skating for a Cure
It was a night of fun, friends, and skates. The Pearce Q. Foundation hosted its 4th Annual Skating for a Cure on Wednesday night at the Christina Skating Center.
Skating for a Cure is a fundraiser for the Pearce Q. Foundation. The whole purpose of this event is to help raise awareness about childhood cancer. In 2011, 150 people attended the event and each year it is a success. According to Pearce Quesenberry, “A lot of people come out and learn about the disease and have fun!”
This night of fun and friends goes toward a good cause. The Pearce Q. Foundation has 3 main goals for Skating for a Cure. Seventy-five percent of the donations goes toward the children suffering from childhood cancer and their families. “This money could go to paying bills or buying necessities that the family cannot afford,” Pearce explained, “Many parents have to quit there jobs to be with their sick kids 24/7. This puts a lot of financial stress on family.” Furthermore, fifteen percent of the money is for raising awareness for childhood cancer where ten percent goes directly toward Research for Childhood Cancer. Currently, the research the Pearce Q. Foundation is giving the donations to is at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia led by Dr. Peter Phillips. The research is Malignant Brain Stem Tumors and brain cyst.
The whole night seemed like a definite success as a lot of people came out to support the event. If you missed it, be sure to mark your calendars for April 14, 2012 to help raise money in the Four Miles of Hope which is one of the biggest events in the Pearce Q. Foundation, raising $40,000 last year.
