On March 1st, Padua Academy Track and field began with two weeks of tryouts. At the end of the two weeks, they put together a team of about forty girls who are willing to work in order to improve. Some people may believe that track would be an “easy” sport, but they are completely wrong. The track team practices every day after school.
The forty girls participating run to Baynard, where they practice, and then stretch and prepare for the rest of the practice. The girls then divide into two main groups; distance and sprints, while there are other girls who do field events or hurdles that work separately. The girls who prefer distance races usually run about five miles every other practice. While the sprinters, practice shortening their time, on the same days the distance group goes for a long run. On the days in between, the girls have a workout. Depending on your event, the workouts vary.
Even though the sport is far from easy it is very rewarding, and the girls love being apart of the team. Bridget Hughes, freshman, explains, “Track is a lot of fun. The girls are great and a lot of fun and I’m in such better shape. But its still a challenge, it shows your speed, endurance, and sportsmanship.” The girls also love the coach, Marnie Giunta. Anna Trolio, Junior on the track team, say, “The coach pays attention to everyone, not just the best.”
