Miss Bishop Comes to Padua

This year, Padua welcomed Miss Bishop to our English Department. She enjoys Padua so far, stating that it “is very friendly and welcoming” and that it “promotes good values”. Also, she’s always liked Padua because it is an all girls Catholic high school, which she is familiar with because she came from Ursuline.

Miss Bishop did not plan on becoming a teacher. She has a double women’s study major in English and planned to work in healthcare outreach. Miss Bishop said that she would have liked to become “involved in something related to women’s healthcare and healthcare for disadvantaged groups”. But, because of a random call one day, all of that changed.

Miss Bishop said, “a friend randomly called me to come teach and I was like yeah sure I’ll try it,” and “I have loved teaching ever since”. Her main inspiration for teaching is her Mother. “My mom is a professor but she used to teach American Literature and drama and whatnot and really felt that I’d enjoy teaching it, which I do.” Education has always been prominent in Miss Bishop’s family, furthering her love for teaching.

When asked about her teaching style, Miss Bishop replied with, “I am not someone who lectures a lot, so I would say usually whatever we’re doing I try and model. Then I try and guide my students through that model and kind of let them go on their own”. She wants her classroom to be centered around the students as well and strives for them to work hard and achieve great things. Miss Bishop hopes that her students “actually get something meaningful from her class that is something that they will take with them to college and use in the future.”
