MTV VMA’s Highlights

An estimated 13.7 million viewers tuned in on August 24 for the 31st annual MTV Video Music Awards.  Ariana Grande opened singing “Break Free” but was quickly blown off stage by Nicki Minaj rapping her hit song “Anaconda.”  Jessie J and Ariana Grande later joined Nicki Minaj, who later had a wardrobe malfunction.  Never missing a beat, Minaj kept it professional by holding her dress together with two hands.

Miley Cyrus took home the biggest award of the night, Video of the Year, for “Wrecking Ball.”  She again left the VMA’s with an indelible moment, sending a former homeless runaway up to the stage to accept the award on behalf of her.  Miley tried to make awareness for the struggle of the homeless youth in America, definitelyshowing her improving maturity since last year’s VMA’s.  Freshman Grace Taggart responds the Miley’s moment by saying, “I thought Miley’s decision to bring attention to the homeless youth was very touching and I admire her for that.”

The biggest talk of the night was undoubtedly Beyoncé.  Her incredible 15 minute long medley has kept everyone talking.  Sales for her “Flawless” and “XO” singles rose more than 1,200 percent apiece.  Other performances were from Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, Sam Smith, Usher, and Iggy Azalea with Rita Ora.  The night concluded with Beyoncé’s husband, Jay Z, and daughter, Blue Ivy, on stage to present Beyoncé with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.  The VMA’s were overall a great night with amazing performances.
