Review: Insurgent
The movie Insurgent, based on of the second book in the Divergent series, released to theaters on March 20. The sci-fi action movie stars talented actors and actresses such as Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Ansel Elgort. The acting talent and the source material should make for a highly entertaining movie, but did the director of Insurgent consider the source? The Padua community is split on what they think of the movie and if it lived up to the hype that was generated by the trailers.
Gabrielle Cellucci (‘18) was disappointed in the movie, despite others leaving the movie theater satisfied. “I read the book before going to the movie, and it was nothing like it. They excluded key events from the plot line, like the romance.” This is a common problem when adapting a book into a movie. Fans of the book hate to see the story they have come to love destroyed on the big screen.
Kendal Cairns (‘18) however had a different opinion. “I thought the movie was really good, but I haven’t read the book. I think that’s why I liked it.” Insurgent may be a visibly pleasing and well acted movie, but there’s a “fandom,” or a community of people who have read the Divergent Series who may be disappointed by the lack of source material.
