How Nutrition Affects School Performance

You are sitting in class when suddenly, your stomach begins to to make a loud rumbling sound. That can only mean one thing…you’re hungry! You immediately begin to think about what you’re going to eat for lunch. At last, the bell has rung and lunch period has begun. After all of your exhausting morning classes, you deserve a chance to sit back, relax, and enjoy the lunchtime period with your friends. But what exactly are you going to eat for lunch? Did you pack a lunch or are you having something from the cafeteria?

According to KidsHealth, an interactive website created by Nemours, more than any other meal, kids have the most control over what they eat for lunch at school. Kids have the choice to eat healthier foods, like fruit over less healthier foods such as sugary sweets. Children who have balanced and stable meals at home tend to develop good eating habits at an early age. There is no aspect of your life that is not influenced by the foods you eat. We are all aware just how important nutrition is but do we really make the right choices when it comes to eating a well-balanced meal?

Choosing what you want to eat for any meal of the day and making healthy decisions is crucial for one’s overall physical well-being and level of performance in school. Like most Padua students, you’re probably rushing out the door each morning without having something to eat for breakfast. So what we eat, or for that matter don’t eat, during the lunch period, can determine whether or not we’ll be mentally sharp for those late period tests. By eating healthy and nutritious foods on an everyday basis, people are become more energetic and feel stronger, physically and mentally. Many students rave over the delicious meals and snacks Padua’s cafeteria provides for its faculty and student body. But what sorts of food decisions do the students of Padua make?

When asked what she normally buys for lunch at school, freshman Julia Schroeder says, “It really depends on what my mood is for the day. Some days I am guilty of buying less healthy foods like pizza, chips, and iced tea. On other days, I try to choose healthier foods like a salad, a cup of fruit, and a bottle of water.”

There are also many students who bring their own lunch to school each day. Freshman Colleen O’Brien stated, “I pretty much pack my lunch every day. In my lunch it’s mostly fruit and granola, unless we have leftover pasta then I’ll bring that. Also, I always have either a water or an apple juice as a drink.”

Whether you’re buying or packing a lunch each day, it’s important to include some healthy items in your meal. However, it’s also a good idea to satisfy that sweet tooth once in awhile.
