Take a Peek at the Movies You’re Looking Forward to Seeing This Year
After a great year of movies from 2015, the new year is looking more amazing with a wide range of movies, from superheroes, to dystopian, to horror/thriller, to action, and even some children’s movies. Some of the first movies this year were released a few weeks ago, but fear not, the country has a full year of film ahead of us
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 25)
Following the release of Man of Steel, Warner Bros. Pictures brings back more action to please the crowd. Batman, defender of Gotham City, travels to Metropolis to protect and fight with Superman, while another danger threatens humankind and all of it’s existence. With Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, and Jesse Eisenberg, viewers will watch the ultimate battle between some of the greatest superheroes.
Jungle Book (April 15)
Children and adults alike all know and love the Disney movie, The Jungle Book, but now viewers will watch it live in theaters. To refresh your memory, The Jungle Book is about a young boy, Mowgli, who was raised by Indian wolves as a child. When a dangerous tiger threatens Mowgli’s life, he leaves his home in the jungle. While being guided by the famous black panther, Bagheera, and Baloo the Bear, he sets out on his journey. Along the way, Mowgli meets several other creatures lurking in the shadows of the jungle, including Kaa, a python who hypnotizes him, and King Louie, the orangutan. With many more adventures throughout the film, you’ll always be on the edge of your seat watching the classic on the big screen. The movie stars Neel Sethi, Bill Murray, Lupita Nyong’o, and Scarlett Johansson.
Captain America: Civil War (May 6)
One year after Avengers: Age of Ultron, a second international incident results in collateral damage, and politicians form a system of responsibility to determine when to bring in the Avengers. Two opposing teams: one wishing to operate without rules, the other supporting the government overseeing the city. Together, they attempt to protect the world from a new enemy, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and Sebastian Stan.
X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27)
Since long ago, the first and most powerful mutant, Apocalypse, who is immortal and invincible, has been worshiped as a god. Following his wakening after several millennia, Apocalypse is disappointed with the real, modern world, and recruits a team of mutants to “cleanse” humanity and create a new life. This forces Raven and Charles Xavier to lead a team of young X-Men to save humanity. The movie stars James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaac and Nicholas Hoult.
Finding Dory (June 17)
Bringing back the well known voices of Albert Brooks (Marlin, the clownfish) and Ellen DeGeneres (Dory), viewers will embark on an adventure of a lifetime bringing back good childhood memories of Finding Nemo. Across the ocean blue, Dory searches for her lost mother (Diane Keaton) and father (Eugene Levy). With supporting voice actors, Pixar and Disney will hopefully bring together another well-rounded movie that people of all ages with enjoy.
Independence Day: Resurgence (June 24)
Twenty years after the War of 1996, the United Nations creates the Earth Space Defense, a universal defense program that serves as Earth’s early warning system; this was also used to defend aliens from tearing apart the planet. However, the aliens were able to send a signal before their defeat. Threatening the human race once more, they head into a larger and more powerful battle than ever before. Starring Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, along with newcomers William Fichtner and Liam Hemsworth.
Ghostbusters (July 15)
A spin off from the original Ghostbusters from 1984, Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy star in the new film. Erin Gilbert (Wiig) and Abby Yates (McCarthy) are two overlooked authors who wrote a book stating that ghosts are real. After a few years, Gilbert lands a job as a teacher at a University, but because of her style, she is laughed out of the school. The two authors meet again when ghosts invade Manhattan, and, with a few helpers, they try to save the world from ghosts taking over.
The Girl on the Train (Oct. 7)
Based on the #1 New York Times Bestseller, The Girl on the Train revolves around Rachel Watson’s life before her divorce. Every day on the train on her way to London, Rachel (Emily Blunt) passes her old house. The house where her husband still lives with his new wife and child. Avoiding the emotional pain, she starts to observe a couple that lives a few houses down, Megan and Scott Hipwell. Day after day, she creates a perfect life for the two in her head, but one day, she passes the house and sees something shocking. The next day, she has no memory of the night before, only a bad feeling that something happened. After watching the TV reports, Rachel discovers that Megan has gone missing and she is dragged into the case. Starring Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Luke Evans, along with co-stars Lisa Kudrow, and Haley Bennett.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Dec. 16)
Although the movie is not “in space,” but from the perspective of a ground-war feeling, the cinematography still manages to maintain the crucial Star Wars feel. After following the foundation of the Galactic Empire, a band of Rebel fighters are brought together to complete a hopeless mission: steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to control the Emperor’s rule. The movie stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn.
