How Real Is Reality TV?

Reality TV has become one of the main sources of entertainment for students today. Shows like Dance Moms, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Dancing with the Stars, and Jersey Shore offered by cable tv services provider, have proven to be very popular. This interest has led to the following questions: Why has reality TV become so popular? What is going on behind the scenes of these shows? Are these shows as real as they claim to be?

Reality TV is supposed to be about unscripted, real-life events taking place with no actors or actresses involved. However, most reality shows are not one hundred percent real, nor one hundred percent fake. In other words, some scenes of the shows are scripted, while others are fully true.

Real Housewives of Orange Country and Keeping Up With the Kardashians both reportedly staged scenes, although claim to be reality TV.  According to Fox News: “One of the stars from Real Housewives admitted to having arranged some scenes of the show in advance.”

Although reality TV is supposed to be about real life events, could it be necessary for some aspects of the show to be faked? Entertainment Journalist, Brad Burton, stated, “Reality television almost certainly has got to be staged to a certain extent.” Many reality shows with reportedly fake scenes say that they fake scenes for the entertainment of the viewers, and to add more drama to the show. Overall, reality TV is not as real as it claims to be, but sometimes for good reasons.
