Emmy Awards Highlights

Last week the 66th Emmy Awards recognized television’s best shows, biggest stars, and best performances. All the biggest stars were under the same roof dressed to impress. The show had a great beginning with Seth Meyers Saturday Night Live’s being his playful self as he joked about the VMAs, the schedule change, and even a few of the biggest TV shows including How I Met Your Mother, Orange is the New Black, and Duck Dynasty.  This comic relief got him many laughs as prepared the crowd and viewers for the next two hours.

The first Emmy kicked off with style as Amy Poehler strutted her way onto the stage, pretending to Beyonce. The first Emmy went to Phil Dunphy (from Modern Family) for Outstanding Supporting Character. For his speech he read a speech that the kids from Modern Family wrote for him. The next Emmy was given to Louis C.K. for Outstanding Comedy Writing in a Comedy Series. This was his 6th win and 30th nomination. Many more awards were then given out including Best Comedy Series (Modern Family), Best Actress in a Comedy Series (Julia Louis Dreyfus “Veep”), and Outstanding Miniseries (Fargo).  Rebecca Miller, a freshman at Padua, disagreed with Fargo’s award though, saying, I think that American Horror Story should have won that award.Breaking Bad also won six awards that night including Best Drama Series.

Even though there were big winners that took most of the attention, it is  important not to not to let the shared funny moments go unnoticed. Seth Meyers and Billy Eichner from Billy on the Street went to the street to ambush people and asked them about the Emmys. Some of the things that they said were priceless. Following this as well was a surprise musical performance consisting of a mashup of the nominated TV show’s theme songs, featuring Weird Al Yankovic. Also Adam Samberg made an appearance as King Joffrey.

There were also number of big shockers for the night. Martin Freeman (Sherlock) won for  Best Supporting Actor which then carried on to Benedict Cumberbatch and Steven Moffat both winning awards as well. The shockers don’t stop there though, American Horror Story’s leading lady played by actress Jessica Lange, also won an award and managed to beat out a good number of other popular actress’s for it. Ty Burrell also won  Comedy Supporting Actor and Amazing Race  took back their crown after losing to the The Voice last year.

The show was even emotional too, when there was a heartfelt tribute to remember fallen, stars including Robin Williams. It didn’t just stop there though; Billy Crystal also took the stage and said a few words for his old friend, which reminded everyone of his humor and how he was such a great friend. “As genius as he was onstage, he also managed to be the greatest friend one could ever imagine too, being supportive, protective, and loving, It’s very hard to talk about him in a past because he’s sense, so present in all of our lives. For almost 40 years, he was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy, and it can be sad to think some of the brightest stars are extinct now.”

This years Emmys had it all – Laughter, tears and celebration. With shocking wins and with some of the best actors and actresses in the same place, its going to be hard to top this next year.
