Beginning on March 12th, 2015, Padua junior and senior students were invited and encouraged to be hero’s and make a difference in the lives of others by participating as donors in another annual Blood Drive run by the Blood Bank of Delmarva. Any student that is of 17 years of age, weighs at least 110 lbs, and is in general good health was given the opportunity to give blood on Friday, March 27th. Each donation has the potential to assist 3 different patients with medical needs, or, save someone’s life.

“The process really is relatively painless,” said Mrs. Fundakowski, Padua’s Academic Dean and the head of the 2015 Blood Drive. It takes approximately 60-75 minutes and begins with the Blood Bank of Delmarva volunteers asking the donor for permission to have their temperature and blood pressure taken, read some information, then answer a few questions. “The actual blood donation lasts only 5 to 7 minutes,” said Mrs. Fundakowski. “Then once you have donated, the donor finishes the process by sitting in the canteen area for 15 minutes, having a snack and a drink.”

“It feels good to have the power to save the life,” said junior donor Josefa Castelli.

“I think giving blood is something that makes you feel good because you know you’re helping somebody in some small way,” agreed Ms. Keefe, a Padua religion teacher and donor. “I also love atmosphere of it though, because the staff is so positive and cheery, just wanting you to be comfortable throughout the process.”
