American Hustle Movie Review

Newly released movie American Hustle, a film about con artists, has so many twists and turns weaved into its plot it is hard to keep track of them all.  Not until the very last minute do you understand which characters are truly conning the others, and how the ending will play out.

Director David O Russell assembled an all-star cast for his latest movie. Christian Bale plays main character Irving Rosenfeld, an overweight man with an elaborate comb-over who owns a laundry mat and cons desperate people out of their money on the side. Rosenfeld’s girlfriend and partner in crime Sydney Prosser is played by Amy Adams. Sydney is attracted to charismatic Irving despite his physical appearance, and falls in love despite his wife and adopted son. Jennifer Lawrence plays Irving’s beautiful yet crazy wife, Rosalyn. Completely unfit to be a mother, Rosalyn is constantly causing problems in the movie.

Early into the film FBI agent Richie DiMaso, played by Bradley Cooper, busts Sydney when she falls for his act and tries to con his out of his money. DiMaso agrees to let her go if she and Irving use their skills to help him take down New Jersey mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner), and eventually corrupt politicians and mafia members. Polito is unknowingly caught between con artists and Feds. Rosalyn’s unpredictable personality could be the trigger that causes the entire plan to come crashing down. Filled with surprises and shocks, American Hustle is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.
