Child Movie Star and American Diplomat Passes at 85

On Tuesday, February 11, 2014, hearts broke all over the world as the news spread of the death of former child star and incredible human being, Shirley Temple Black. She passed away late Monday night due to natural causes at the age of eighty five. In her early years, Temple worked in Hollywood and brought in a salary of $50,000 per movie, which during her time was completely unheard of. She started her entertainment career at age three and sang, danced, and acted for about eighteen years. Her signature look included the corkscrew blonde curls that won the hearts of millions. Cnn.com claims her to be the most popular child star in Hollywood history.

At the young age of twenty two, Temple retired from filmmaking, married Charles Black, and started out on her new career as a foreign diplomat. Former United States president, George H.W. Bush released a statement after her passing. “She captured the affections of millions around the world by her endearing performances on the silver screen as a young girl,” he said, “but I also admired Shirley for her selfless service to our country later in her life.” Also in his statement, he said, “She truly lifted people up and earned not only a place in our hearts – but also our enduring respect.”

Temple was an icon for many years, even after her filmmaking career came to an end. She was a hero for many reasons, including her successful battle with breast cancer in 1972. She will be missed by many, even some of Padua Academy’s own. After hearing the news, senior Sarah Lott exclaimed “That really breaks my heart! She was my childhood idol.” The passing of Shirley Temple Black sparked nostalgic conversations throughout the school, and throughout the world.
